Making F&O trading accessible without encouraging reckless trades

Fisdom wanted to expand beyond mutual funds into derivatives trading (Futures & Options). The business goal: tap into India's growing retail F&O market, which had historically been dominated by professional traders using clunky, overwhelming interfaces. My job: design an option chain UI that made F&O accessible to first-time traders without dumbing it down or encouraging high-risk behavior.

The challenge

Option chains are dense. Professional traders monitor Nifty 50, Bank Nifty, Fin Nifty, and USDINR simultaneously - tracking strike prices, expiries, Greeks, and correlations across indices in real time. Most F&O platforms are built for pros: information-heavy, zero guidance, impossible to navigate for retail investors.

The design problem: How do you simplify F&O for new traders while respecting SEBI's mandate to discourage speculative trading? We couldn't make it too easy, or we'd be accused of pushing people into risky trades. But if we made it too complex, no one would use it.

What I did

Research: Studied competitor platforms (Zerodha, Groww, Upstox) and interviewed beta users to understand how they tracked multiple indices. Identified pain points: information overload, manual cross-referencing between indices, no holistic view of portfolio risk.

Design decision

  • Built an indexed, searchable, customizable watchlist so traders could group contracts by strategy (e.g., "weekly expiry plays," "hedging positions")

  • Designed linked instrument panels with option chain ladder views and payoff charts — let users see correlations across assets without juggling multiple tabs

  • Created a position analysis dashboard showing consolidated P&L, Greeks exposure, and margin utilization in one view

  • Added configurable risk alerts (e.g., "notify me if margin utilization hits 80%")

Balancing act: Included educational tooltips and risk warnings without making the UI patronizing. Example: hovering over "Greeks" showed a plain-English explanation, but the data itself stayed professional-grade.

The Outcome

  • Launched to 1,000 beta users in Q3 2022 for A/B testing

  • 30% reduction in missed trading opportunities (user feedback: "I used to lose track of expiries; now I don't")

  • Average session time increased by 24% vs. previous trading UI

  • 60% of F&O traders used the platform daily within the first month

  • Users praised the macro-correlation view — being able to see how Nifty and Bank Nifty moved together helped them adjust strategies in real time

  • Position analysis dashboard led to measurably better risk management (users reported fewer margin calls)

  • Customizable workspace became the most-used feature — traders loved tailoring the UI to their strategies
